I'm working on a new kitchen for a client, and as I look around at countertop options, it got me thinking about a conversation I had recently with my cousin about granite. My cousin asked me "don't you think granite has been overdone?"
Well, the short answer is ... no, definitely not. Aside from its durability, easy maintenance, and budget friendliness as compared to other stone options, the variations in its looks are innumerable. Granite is quarried around the world in locations including Italy, Brazil, India, and Africa; some types have flecks, some have spots, some are veined, some are flowing, and some are sparsely patterned, if at all. And the colors -- black, white, blue, green, beige, red, brown, need I say more? My point here is that if you're the type of person that wants a countertop surface that is unique, that none of your friends have seen before, it is likely you can still find that.... in granite.
If you decide to go with the granite option, I cannot overstate the importance of lighting. The gleam of polished granite is simply gorgeous, but only shows when light is reflecting off of it. If you want to fully enjoy the beauty of the stone, then don't skimp on the lighting, both overhead and under the cabinets. Your granite will show in all it's natural glory!
