One reason I love interior decorating is that I have no box around me stylistically. I love it all -- traditional, contemporary, country-cozy, easy elegance, international flair, "lodgey" comfort. My love of so many different styles makes decorating for clients a lot easier. When I walk into client homes, I become a style chameleon, and transform into whatever type of decorator I need to be for that particular client. My goal always is to put myself in my client's shoes to create a space that my clients themselves would have put together if they were designers.
Most people have design preferences, and when it comes to your home, it is important that the space reflects your personal style and tastes. But have you ever found yourself loving somebody else's home when it doesn't at all reflect your style and tastes? The fact is, design style is not what makes a great room.
Certain furniture groupings are perfect arrangements, no matter whether the furnishings are traditional, country, contemporary, or a mix of these. The arrangement of wall art in particular patterns or placement in specific areas will be fabulous, without regard to whether the art is modern, traditional, or folksy. The style of light fixtures is less important than the effect of having varied lighting in the space. And balance -- I don't care what the style of the room -- a well balanced space feels good, and an unbalanced space does not.
When you walk into one of my client 's homes, even if you don't like a single thing in common with my client's tastes, you are still likely to feel and appreciate the intangibles in the room -- it is balanced, well laid out, and feels welcoming. You can substitute your tastes for theirs and quickly realize that a universally great room is less about individual style and taste and is more about principles like composition, layout, lighting, and balance. I like to think when a client hires me, my job isn't to impose my personal styles and tastes on them, but rather to take their style and taste and compose it into a room that just IS well designed, no matter what your taste.
